Dr. Kevin Trumble, was the founding director of PCMC and is active also in the Purdue Heat Treating Consortium (PHTC). In addition to an emphasis on industrial projects, he has fundamental research programs, mainly experimental, focusing on the processing of metals and ceramics and their composites, including solidification, powder and deformation processing. In metal casting he has worked mainly on shape casting, in both ferrous and non-ferrous alloy systems, especially stainless steels, nickel-based superalloys, bronzes, and high-strength aluminum alloys. Areas of special experience and interest include the thermochemistry of refractory- and mold-metal reactions, wetting and capillarity in mold filling, and casting design and defect formation, as well as mechanical properties of castings. Most projects have involved quantitative analysis of microstructure development. Prof. Trumble has taught a broad range of courses mainly in the materials processing stem, as well as metallurgical failure analysis, in which he regularly consults with industry.

Current Casting Research Projects

  • Recrystallization defects in heat treatment of single-crystal superalloy castings
  • Directional solidification of magnetic alloys
  • Clustered shrinkage porosity effects on mechanical behavior of cast alloys
